At just 23, Lal Batman is carving a distinct path as a boundary-defying artist. Her work is a vivid blend of eclectic inspirations, fueled by a love for travel, discovery, and experimentation. We caught up with Lal to talk about her routines, her evolving philosophy on aesthetics, and how she finds balance in a life full of creative chaos.

Art can evoke so much. What does it mean to you emotionally?

For me, art is a compass—it guides me through life’s twists and turns. It reveals unexpected perspectives and eases the weight of everyday chaos, emotional challenges, and pressure. I’m deeply emotional, like a sponge that absorbs everything around me. Sometimes, it’s overwhelming, and that’s when creating becomes my outlet. It’s freeing, transformative, and makes life feel fluid. Art’s ability to transform helps me find resilience in tough times and a deep sense of calm within.

Your work often plays with aesthetics. How has your understanding of it changed over time?

Experimenting with different materials and practices has been a journey of constant discovery. Lately, I’ve been exploring the aesthetics of the 14th to 18th centuries and blending them with modern-day icons and textures. This contrast creates layers of meaning and keeps my work dynamic. I love merging historical elements with contemporary influences—it’s become central to my unique perspective. To me, beauty is timeless, and this interplay of old and new reflects that.

How does engaging with various disciplines shape your daily routines?

Working across multiple disciplines is both exhilarating and exhausting. My days are intense and often demand sacrifices in my personal routines. But over time, I’ve realized that my balance lies in this intensity—it’s my rhythm, and I’ve learned to embrace it. Watching videos of meticulously organized lives on social media sometimes makes me envious, but I know my tempo is different. My rhythm alternates between bursts of excitement and quiet introspection, and I’ve made peace with it.

How has your perception of beauty evolved? What does beauty mean to you?

I’ve always been captivated by beauty, whether in fashion, design, or art. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that beauty isn’t just about appearances—it’s in the energy and confidence something or someone radiates. True beauty, for me, is all about aura. It’s magnetic and unforgettable.

Which artists have influenced your perspective on beauty?

Anna Weyant and Jordan Wolfson.

Do you have any go-to rituals for feeling good inside and out?

Scent is incredibly important to me—every city and moment has its own distinct smell in my mind. My hair is also a key part of how I feel; its look and texture can completely shift my mood. And dancing—it’s my ultimate escape. It takes me out of the everyday and into a space where I feel completely free.

Colors are central to your art. Does that carry into your everyday life?

Absolutely. My work reflects my life, and color is a big part of both.

How do you recharge when you’re feeling low?

I book a flight and disappear. Traveling to new destinations is my ultimate reset button.

With such a busy schedule, where do you go when you need a break?

I’m not tied to one place for inspiration, so I travel often. Switzerland and Thailand are my favorite escapes.

What are the must-have items in your travel bag?

Laneige’s Lip Sleeping Mask, Maison Crivelli’s Tubéreuse Astrale perfume, Nuxe’s moisturizing face cream, and a good hairbrush are my essentials.

What’s your favorite flaw?

Perfectionism.
